- The young Nigerian artist, Wizkid
Singer/songwriter Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun (aka Wizkid) is one of Nigeria's biggest R&B crossover acts, having worked with Drake, Skepta, and Chris Brown, among others. He first found regional success in 2011 with the massively popular single "Holla at Your Boy," which appeared on his debut album, Superstar. Wizkid went global in 2016 after his collaboration with Drake, "One Dance," soared to number one in 15 countries, resulting in a multi-album deal with RCA, which issued his Caribbean-influenced major-label debut, Sounds from the Other Side, in 2017. The acclaimed Made in Lagos followed in 2021, featuring the internationally charting hit single "Essence." Just one year later, Wizkid followed up with his fifth album, More Love, Less Ego. Balogun began his career in music when he was just 11 years old. His first record, Lil Prinz, was recorded in 2001 in collaboration with Glorious Five, a group consisting of Balogun and his friends from church. In 2006, he started pursuing music full-time, first collaborating with various Nigerian pop acts including OJB Jezreel, Naeto C, and Banky W. By 2011, he was ready to record his debut studio album as a solo artist; Superstar was released by Empire Mates Entertainment (EME for short) to great critical and public acclaim across Africa, propelling Wizkid to stardom in his home country. After multiple delays and label disagreements, he released his sophomore studio album, Ayo, in 2014. The record featured a multitude of guest appearances, including a spot from Femi Kuti. It also featured Balogun's global breakthrough track "Ojuelegba." Not only did the single cement his status as one of Nigeria's biggest pop acts, it was also picked up and remixed by Drake and Skepta, thrusting Wizkid into the international spotlight. In return, he appeared on Drake's 2016 smash single "One Dance." In March 2017, Wizkid signed a major-label deal with RCA and Sony International, which would release his third LP, Sounds from the Other Side, later that year. A handful of singles appeared in advance of the album, including "Sweet Love" and the Drake-assisted "Come Closer." In October 2018, Wizkid issued a pair of singles, "Master Groove" and "Fever," to mark Nigeria's Independence Day. The following year, he joined Beyoncé and Saint Jhn for The Lion King: The Gift track "Brown Skin Girl" and released his own single, "Joro." The EP Soundman, Vol.1 was issued by Balogun's Starboy Entertainment imprint in 2019. Following his involvement in the successful protests to scrap Nigeria's controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Wizkid's fourth album, Made in Lagos, arrived in October 2020. Featuring collaborations with H.E.R., Damian Marley, Burna Boy, and several others, the Grammy-nominated set was a critical and commercial success, appearing on numerous year-end album lists and reaching number 15 on the U.K. album charts. The record's fifth single, the Grammy-nominated "Essence" (featuring Tems), became a worldwide hit, reaching number 17 in the U.K. and even becoming the first Nigerian song to chart in the Billboard Hot 100. After the track became a hit, a remix featuring Justin Bieber was released. Wizkid kicked off 2022 with "Bad to Me," the lead single from his fifth album, the P2J-produced More Love, Less Ego. Featuring guests like Ayra Starr, Shenseea, Don Toliver, the album was released in November of that year, earning chart success around Europe and hitting number 59 on the Billboard 200.
- HOW TO ACHIEVE A SUCCESSFUL LIFE
Becoming successful in life entails some principles which must be put to practice. If you take a good look at some successful people and their lifestyle, you will discover how they live their lives to attain that level of success. Below are the approaches to a successful life. Goal Knowing what you want in life is the first thing, while knowing how you can achieve it is another thing or second part. Write down your goals as written goals can tell your subconscious what you want even if you forget on a conscious level. Your goals can influence your decisions to move you closer to what you really want only when you know what you want. Goals are like a map on your journey to get where you want to be. Knowing what you want greatly increases your chances of success. Take responsibility Successful people take responsibility for their actions, results, and behavior. Successful people believe they are responsible for their own destiny and are proactive in making things happen. Winners don’t have a victim mentality or a fixed mindset. They don’t believe their destiny is predetermined but instead that they determine where they go in life. Self-Discipline Winners in any area of life possess self-discipline in at least their one area of expertise but it usually shows up in most areas. Self-discipline is the ability to control your own actions through inner willpower regardless of how you feel or how strong your impulses become. It’s the skill to overcome the temptation to violate your inner principles and get off track from your goals. Self-discipline enables you to pursue your goals, follow your own strategy, and become the person you want to be. People that become and stay successful are guided by self-discipline using their mind and positive desires to make important decisions and aren’t led away with the wrong decisions by their feelings and negative desires. Self-discipline keeps you on the right path to your goals. Self-Development Self development consists of activities that develop a person's capabilities and potential, build human capital, facilitate employability, and enhance quality of life and the realization of dreams and aspirat. Self-development is different for everyone but the most important part of the process is getting experience doing the things that lead your toward your goals. You need a feedback mechanism to see results and make adjustments and get better systematically. A Coach, or trainer can speed up this part of the process dramatically. Reading To master something you must first know it well and in great detail. Reading is the cheapest, fastest, and easiest path to binge on information that can move you toward your goals. Successful executives read the best business books. Successful entrepreneurs read their profit and loss statement. Successful traders read charts. Successful athletes read their playbook. Successful politicians read history books. Successful people read books. Time Management Time management is very important, you must make good and wise use of your time. Successful people put a high value on their time and use it wisely in high value activities to move them toward their goals incrementally. Time is a limited resource and can’t be replaced once wasted. You can buy time by paying others to do activities that you consider low value. How successful you are has a high correlation on what you spend your time on and how well you manage it to optimize results. Risk Takers At some point in their journey successful people took risks to get to where they are now. It takes the right psychology to both calculate and take risks to move you toward your goals. Most people hate to take any risks and can’t see what could go right with opportunities but only what could go wrong. Taking smart calculated risks is a skill. Perseverance Not quitting is the best strategy for eventually winning. Most people don’t lose they just quit too early. Successful people are the ones that didn’t quit, they kept trying one more time. If you have the right effort and are on the right path then only time separates you from success if you persevere until you win. Even if you are doing the right thing you have to keep doing it until you breakthrough. Your odds of success increase with each good attempt at winning. Follow your passion One primary key to success is following your energy and passion and doing what you love. It’s never easy to do a lot of hard work for a very long-time, but if you enjoy what you’re doing the chances are you will keep going. In studying successful people in every industry the one thing that kept becoming clear is that they all had a passion for their chosen business, sport, or career and worked at it tirelessly like it was their game of choice. For successful people the line between work, hobbies, passion, and life blur together as they love what they do. Determination Determination is the commitment to achieve your goals, regardless of the challenges you might experience. It often includes being decisive and demonstrating resoluteness. People who express determination continue to work to achieve their goals, regardless of other factors. You need to be realistic about your capabilities and leverage your strengths to help improve your determination.
- Full biography of the reggae lord, Lucky Dube
Lucky Dube was born on this date in 1964. He was a Black South African reggae musician. Lucky Philip Dube was born in Ermelo, then in the Eastern Transvaal, now Mpumalanga, South Africa. His parents separated before his birth and he was raised by his mother, Sarah. She named him Lucky because she considered his birth fortunate after a number of failed pregnancies. Along with his two siblings, Thandi and Patrick, Dube spent much of his childhood with his grandmother, while his mother relocated to work. Dube worked as a gardener but, realizing that he wasn't earning enough to feed his family, he began to attend school. There he joined a choir and, with some friends, formed his first musical ensemble, called The Skyway Band. While at school he discovered the Rastafari movement. At 18 Dube joined his cousin's band, The Love Brothers, playing Zulu pop music known as mbaqanga. The band signed with Teal Record Company, (Teal was later incorporated into Gallo Record Company). While Dube was still attending classes, the band recorded material in Johannesburg during his school breaks. Their debut album was released under the name Lucky Dube and the Supersoul. On the second album, Dube wrote some of the lyrics, sang and also began to learn English. After his fifth Mbaqanga album, he dropped the "Supersoul" name. At this time Dube’s fans were responding to some reggae songs he played during live concerts. Inspired by Jimmy Cliff and Peter Tosh, he felt the socio-political messages associated with Jamaican reggae were related to a South Africans in an institutionally racist society. In 1984, he released a new musical direction with the mini album Rastas Never Die. The record sold poorly. Keen to suppress anti-apartheid activism, the apartheid regime banned the album in 1985. Not discouraged he continued to perform the reggae tracks live and wrote and produced a second reggae album. Think About The Children (1985). It went platinum and established Dube as a popular reggae artist in South Africa, in addition to attracting global attention. Dube continued to release commercially successful albums. In 1989 he won four OKTV Awards for Prisoner, won another for Captured Live in 1990 and yet another two for House Of Exile in 1991. His 1993 album, Victims sold over one million copies worldwide. In 1995 he earned a worldwide recording contract with Motown. His album Trinity was the first release on Tabu Records after Motown's acquisition of the label. In 1996 he released a compilation album, Serious Reggae Business, which led to him being named the "Best Selling African Recording Artist" at the World Music Awards and the "International Artist of the Year" at the Ghana Music Awards. His next three albums each won South African Music Awards. His album, Respect, earned a European release and Dube toured internationally, sharing stages with Sinéad O'Connor, Peter Gabriel and Sting. He appeared at the 1991 Reggae Sunsplash and the 2005 Live 8 event in Johannesburg. In addition to music Dube did some acting, appearing in the feature films Voice In The Dark, Getting Lucky and Lucky Strikes Back. On October 18, 2007, Dube was killed in the Johannesburg suburb of Rosettenville shortly after dropping two of his seven children off at their uncle’s house. Police reports suggest he was killed by carjackers. Lucky Dube recorded 22 albums in Zulu, English and Afrikaans in a 25-year period and was one of South Africa's biggest selling reggae artist. He is survived by his wife, Zanele, and seven children.

He has won several music awards, including the awards for Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2007, Artist of the Year at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2009, Best International Act: Africa at the 2011 BET Awards, and Best-selling African Artist at the 2014 World Music Awards, Evolution award at the 2015 MTV Africa Music awards. He adopted the stage name D'banj, a combination of his first name, Dapo, and his surname, Oyebanjo. D'banj is currently best known internationally for his 2012 summer hit "Oliver Twist", an uptempo dance fusion of Afrobeats and electronic dance music that topped the African charts in 2011 and was a top 10 hit in the UK singles chart in 2012 reaching No. 2 on the UK R&B chart. As of 2016, D'banj is ranked to be the richest solo musician in Nigeria according to T.I.N Magazine. D'banj, also known as the Kokomaster or Bangalee, was born in 9 June 1980 in Zaria, the northern part of Nigeria to a military officer who commanded an artillery regiment and a devout church dignitary businesswoman who hailed from Shagamu in Ogun State. Due to his father's profession he moved several times within Nigeria and later moved to England. D'banj was expected to follow his father's military career and was enrolled to the Nigerian Military School at age eleven. However, D'banj resisted the system and disenrolled from the school after three years. While at the Military school he was a member of the elite drum corp of the Nigerian Army. From the Nigerian Military School he proceeded to another military owned institution Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Ibara, Abeokuta where he was a church worker. There he completed his secondary school education. D'banj was introduced to the harmonica by his late older brother, Femi Oyebanjo, who died in a plane crash at age seventeen. With D'banj's love for music being greater than his parents' military aspirations, he struggled for his parents' approval; this can be best heard through an album track, All Da Way from his debut album. Following the death of his 17-year-old brother, D'banj arranged all his possessions on his bed after they were brought home and just picked up his harmonica. I'd play it to remember him." Later, at university, he realised the potential of his new skills with the instrument. "I'd go to the female hostel after lectures, and even if there was no electricity I could play there." He remembers learning Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" after Titanic came out – "and that got me a lot of girls!" D'banj then proceeded to study study mechanical engineering at the Lagos State University to, but due to the constant strikes and several irregularities in the school he decided to withdraw. Plans to continue his studies as a mechanical engineer in London were derailed when he arrived in the UK in 2001, and met Don Jazzy who was trying to make it as a songwriter and producer. D'Banj started hanging around the studio, making ends meet while working as a security guard. "It was OK, because I did nights," he says, "so I could listen to music on my headphones." Don Jazzy told D'Banj he thought he was a star in the making, and sensing that the music scene in Nigeria was "blossoming", the pair returned to Lagos in 2004. That same year came the single "Tongolo"; the video was paid for by D'Banj's mother. It became an instant hit and gained wide acclaim across the country. His first endorsement was with an energy drink called Power Fist. As a tribute to his mentor Fela, D'banj uses a fusion of Afrobeat and Afropop to bring his music to life and into the 21st century with breathless enthusiasm as well as a good dose of humour. His songs are based on his life, often hilarious but with a deeper meaning which documents the struggle of a young Nigerian trying to achieve his dreams.aHe performs in Yoruba, English and Pidgin English. D'banj's debut album, No Long Thing, was released in 2005. It yielded several singles with Tongolo as the lead single. This proved to be his breakthrough single and a hit. It also provided his Koko Master persona, with the term, Koko, taking on a variety of meanings. D'banj's debut success led to collaborations with other artists, including Dare Art Alade and Ikechukwu. D'Banj's single Koko was used by the PDP (ruling political party in Nigeria) as its campaign theme for the 2007 general elections. D'banj's second album Rundown Funk U Up, which was released in 2006, yielded several singles including the club single, Angola(Remix) and the lead single Why Me? This proved to be another hit. D'banj, as an artist of Mo' Hits Records, is also a member of its collective group, Mo' Hits Allstars (includes artists Dr SID, Wande Coal, KaySwitch, and D'Prince). He has once been spotted with one of Nigeria's most talented singers, "Smile Lasisi". The collective's debut album, Curriculum Vitae, was released in December 2007. It included hit singles, "Be Close To You", "Booty Call" and "Move Your Body", which was the lead single. D'banj was featured in Ikechukwu's 2008 hit, "Wind Am Well". God thank you. In September 2016, it was announced D'banj was released from GOOD Music. After several months of speculation and wild rumors, ace producer, Don Jazzy confirmed via his Twitter account the break-up of Mo'Hits. After the break-up, Don Jazzy, D'Prince, Dr SID, Wande Coal started Mavin Records while D'banj founded DB Records and as expected, he signed his younger brother Kayswitch to the label alongside two producers, Jaysleek and Deevee. In December 2012 D'banj signed a mega-deal with Sony. Speaking on the importance of the deal to Sony, the managing director of Sony Music Entertainment, Sean Watson, said: "Partnering with D’Banj is a seminal event for us at Sony Music Entertainment Africa. - The young Nigerian musician, Flavour N'abania
Flavour -- sometimes known as Flavour N'abania -- is a Nigerian singer/songwriter who rose to international fame in 2010 thanks to breakout singles like "Nwa Baby (Ashawo Remix)" and "Oyi (Remix)" from his second album, Uplifted. Over subsequent releases like 2014's Thankful and 2017's Ijele the Traveler, his mix of highlife and Afro-beat, usually sung in his native Igbo tongue, continued to yield hits, making him a popular draw throughout Africa. Born Chinedu Okoli in Enugu, Nigeria, Flavour is a multi-instrumentalist who got his start playing drums in a local church choir. By his late teens, he was working as a professional drummer and had taught himself piano as well. His emergence into the Enugu scene put him in touch with several local producers, who mentored him in production and arrangement as he began his move from sideman to the front of the stage. Using his stage name Flavour N'abania, he released his debut album, N'abania, in 2005. A bright fusion of Igbo highlife and Afro-beat, the record was a modest success and featured the first appearance of his song "Nwa Baby." Five years later, "Nwa Baby" was remixed and included on Flavour's second album, Uplifted, which became a major hit throughout Nigeria and many parts of Africa. Now signed to 2nite Entertainment, Uplifted benefited from a boost in visibility thanks to guests like Jay Dey and Oloye as well as Flavour's experimentation with genres like calypso, reggae, R&B, and hip-hop. His third album, 2012's Blessed, doubled down on the collaborations and was made with numerous different producers and guest artists like Masterkraft and Fally Ipupa. Two years later, the lengthy, 22-song Thankful reunited him with many of the same producers and continued his success throughout Africa. Ijele the Traveler appeared as a surprise album in 2017 and contained another hit in "Baby Na Yoka." Divine, a collaborative EP with blind Liberian singer Semah, appeared the following year, and in 2019 he worked with Otigba Agulu on the EP Ubi Ego.

- Why Osadebe is regarded as Nigerian best highlife musician
When it comes to highlife music, being able to carve out a name for oneself in the African music industry is in itself an admirable achievement. Getting that name etched onto every award and records is even more of a laudable feat set out for those who would distinguish themselves. Yet, being remembered a really long time after your music career is over is probably the highest commendation a music artiste can get. We can better understand the distinctive qualities of all three positions of music fame if we used the simple, general layman terms ‘good, excellent, and outstanding’ which can describe an artiste’s status in the people’s minds as ‘popular, successful or iconic’. At given times, only a select bunch of stars exalt themselves to these lofty statuses through sheer hard work or by a stroke of Fortune. Few have gained popularity; a handful has distinguished themselves to the pinnacle of musical success; yet, the only cream of the crop has secured an iconic status—that reserved tiny spot that is limited to singers whose songs and names have become indelibly associated with a genre—the pioneers, the trailblazers, those who will be remembered long after they’ve gone. Among this elite minority, one name stands in bold relief—Osita Osadebe. Osita Osadebe has blazed through all three levels of musical success and has deservedly earned himself legendary status in the highlife music industry. He is among the select few whose names have not only earned global acclaim but will also be remembered by young and old for as long as possible. I was a kid when Osadebe’s songs were booming at every household and street corner, in every discotheque and bar, on every radio station and event center. Today, more than 30 years ago, these songs are still very popular, even among the younger generation who very likely won’t even be able to identify Osadebe in a picture. This shows how immortalized the iconic Osadebe name has become and the level of influence it had on audiences back in the ’80s and to date. In fact, Osita Osadebe has been acclaimed the King of African Highlife Music. And it’s no accident. Let’s take a brief walk into the life of Osita Osadebe and his place in the world of African highlife music genre. The Beginning Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe (March * 1936—May 11, 2007) was a Nigerian highlife musician of Igbo extract. He was fondly nicknamed “the Doctor of Hypertension,” because of the relief and comfort his music-induced. Among fans, he was popularly referred to as the giant of the African popular highlife music genre. Osadebe hailed from the town of Atani, a farming/fishing area in Anambra State, Nigeria. He came from a long lineage of singers, dancers, and entertainers. Osadebe has always had an inherent love and aptitude for music. However, it was not until he was in Secondary School that his interest in music began to show. He was able to express himself musically through the church choir and the school band. Musical Career Osadebe began his musical career as a passionate but amateur singer at Lagos nightclubs. In 1958, he released his first album, Adanma, a single album-hit which was followed by over 500 songs. Osadebe’s best-known music was the 1984 single hit, “Osondi Onwendi,” which translated literally is a maxim which means “One man’s food is another man’s poison”. This blockbuster single remains the biggest selling record ever in the history of African Highlife, and in effect, Osadebe’s most popular song. In the same year of release, Osundi Owendi sold over 750,000 copies. It was responsible for catapulting Osadebe to success in the musical field. With a successful career spanning beyond 40 years, he is widely regarded as one of the best and most popular highlife musicians in Nigeria. He is also seen as the all-time best Igbo Highlife musician and king of the genre. Osadebe’s genre was the Igbo highlife music, a derivative of the main African highlife from Ghana, the origin. His style centered around the Igbo traditional musical elements and the Igbo culture. He incorporated elements from jazz, samba, waltz, and calypso into his style to give an interesting mix which easily marked him apart from the classics, in a rather positive way. Highlife music was rising to great prominence in Lagos, Nigeria, in the ’50s. However, a major turnaround came in the late 1960s when the Easterners left Lagos on a massive exodus back home following the Nigerian-Biafran War. This major incident did not significantly affect Osadebe and his band as they continued to tour Lagos and perform during and after the war. However, it did trigger a new movement that would positively influence classical highlife music forever. First, it gave rise to new music genres like Juju music, Afrobeat, James Brown, and other styles that later dominated Lagos. The Nigeria-Biafra conflict created a deep Igbo awareness which inspired Osadebe and other Eastern highlife artistes to pioneer a new genre called the Igbo highlife. Osadebe’s last album was Kedu America, released in January 1996. Works & Legacies Contrary to popular misconception, Osadebe did not create the highlife music genre. Highlife music has its origins in Ghana, from where it spread through other regions of West Africa and into Nigeria. Osita Osadebe, however, was among the pioneers of a Highlife music derivative known as the Igbo Highlife. His contributions in this genre were so significant that his reputation grew larger than life and his iconic name became strongly attached to the highlife music niche. This status earned him the fan title the King of Highlife. He recorded a total of about 500 songs, half of which were produced. His records were marked by their rich Igbo cultural heritage and were composed to accommodate a wide and diverse audience background. Original highlife music uses jazz horns and multiple guitars and was basically danced to. Osadebe reinvented highlife music. His Igbo Highlife genre incorporated elements from jazz, calypso, rumba, samba, waltz, merengue, and bolero, making it almost receptive to all groups and fit for all occasions. Ever versatile, he recorded in English, Pidgin English, and Igbo. His songs were marked by their sonorous pitch and rusty Igbo lyrics. Osadebe’s songs were also composed to be danced to; no party was complete without his song played. If one wasn’t a fan, at least, he could appreciate the interesting stories, metaphors, and maxims skilfully infused into Osadebe’s songs with the hope of passing a call-to-response message to the listeners about life morals. In later compositions at the height of his musical career, Chief Osadebe began to use satiric social commentaries in his songs. Towards the tail end of his career, he also began to indulge in personal word battles against his rivals through his lyrical themes. Osadebe’s fanbase embraced his compositions with complete loyalty and consumed his music with a vigorous appetite. Demise On May 11, 2007, Chief Stephan Osita Osadebe breathed his last at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, Connecticut, after suffering from an acute respiratory difficulty. At 71, with an illustrious career and a fulfilled life, Osita Osadebe crossed the bridge to the “other side,” where hopefully he’d still entertain. Osadebe had a remarkable ability to mesmerize mortals, spirits, and even the gods. Final Thoughts Chief Stephan Osita Osadebe has been gone long ago, but his legacy lives on and remains largely appreciated. He was the King of African Highlife Music.
